It certainly is ‘for real’ as plans for a virtual nativity with 30 children aged 3-15yrs are underway at the Aberdeen Church of Scotland churches in the west of the city. (Cults, Mannofield, Peterculter, Craigiebuckler and Kingswells).

Rev Shuna Dicks explains how this can happen, “Churches are finding new and exciting ways in which to express the Christmas Message of Jesus’s birth and the participants in this virtual nativity had great fun recording their lines on Zoom in full costumes. The end result will be used for our Nativity Service on the 20th of December. This service will be broadcast from our Aberdeen West Churches YOUTUBE channel The virtual nativity is also going to be used by Aberdeen City Council as part of their Online Advent Calendar and will be a treat for all who are following this calendar on the 24th December.  Aberdeen West Churches also have their own version of an Advent Calendar with a message being posted each morning on our Aberdeen West Churches Facebook Page

As well as the Nativity we have lots of exciting things happening in the coming weeks. Everything from Santa’s Grotto to special services on Christmas Eve and on Christmas morning. In Cults, along with our ecumenical partners at St Devenick’s Scottish Episcopal Church and Hillview Community Church, we are working with the local Community Council to provide an ‘Angel Scavenger Hunt’ and a Community Christmas Carol walk where people follow a series of posters displayed along a route from Cults Kirk Centre up to Hillview Community Church via Cults Parish Church and St Devenick’s.

We are also mindful that many in the city will be finding life difficult at the moment and we are encouraging our members to continue to support the city foodbanks. One way of doing this is by a reverse Advent Calendar. People are asked to pop a different item each day into a bag or box which will be collected and delivered to the foodbanks we support (Cyrenians, Instant Neighbour and Somebody Cares). Amy Bender Probationer Minister at Mannofield has been leading this initiative.
